Venous Thromboembolism (VTE), a condition in which blood clots form (most often) in the deep veins of the leg (known as deep vein thrombosis, DVT) and can travel in the circulation and lodge in the lungs (known as pulmonary embolism, PE), is categorized by the U.S. Surgeon General as a major public health problem. Hospitalized patients are at an increased VTE risk, and the use of appropriate prophylaxis, chemical and/or mechanical, can reduce this. VTE is relatively common and associated with reduced survival, substantial health-care costs, and frequent re-occurrence. However, many prevention efforts fail due to lack of standardized guidance integrated at the point of care, or due to flawed risk assessment models that either offer no guidance or are so complicated that providers bypass them. Two weeks ago, Galen attended the 2017 International MUSE conference at the Gaylord Texan Resort Hotel & Convention Center in Dallas, TX. As always there was a lot of anticipation and excitement leading up the 2017 MUSE, and it did not disappoint! Below are the stats from last years conference, you can see why their tagline “Great things happen when people come together,” is so relevant—the educational presentations and networking are huge! We had such a great time attending this year’s MEDITECH CIO forum! Within the first few minutes of the opening remarks, Joel Benware, CIO of Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, VT had everyone stand up, shake hands and “meet someone new today.”  I thought this set the tone for the entire conference since I walked away in awe of how many truly inspiring people I was able to connect with in just two short days. The hospital is a not-for-profit health care organization with more than 1,500 employees, and 25 facilities in their 10-county service area in the region.
